Plastic plates

Composition

Plastic plates are most commonly made from polystyrene.

Environmental impact

The same issue as with all single-use plastics: they are produced in large quantities and frequently disposed of improperly, resulting in massive amounts of plastic waste in nature and posing a threat to entire ecosystems.

Disposal instructions

Dispose of them in a mixed municipal waste container or a plastic container (depending on local guidelines). Before disposal, clean off any remaining food.

Factoid

Under EU Directive 2019/904 on reducing the impact of certain plastic products, as of July 3, 2021, single-use plastic plates, cutlery, straws, balloon sticks, and cotton swabs may no longer be placed on the market in EU member states. Plastic cutlery is being replaced by wooden, paper, and biodegradable alternatives.
